Brownie Troop 78's World Of People Patch Work

The World Of People Patch is a two module program.  The purpose of this patch is to help the girls gain an understanding and appreciation of individual differences.  Each module takes 6-9 months to complete properly.

Module I is Knowing Myself, My Troop, My Community In this module your troop will discover and learn to understand and appreciate one's own heritage.  The expanding upon that they include the cultural background of others in their troop and community.  The patch design for this module is a rainbow of six colors.  Each color represents a segment of this program: Red- Family Heritage, Orange-In-Troop similarities, Yellow-Community Patch work, Green-Sensitivity Awareness, Blue-International Friendship Through Girl Scouting, and Violet-Stages of Life.  We also found, for the purpose of time,  that weekly homework was necessary for much of this patch. This patch was fun because each segment had a large variety of activities.   (Below under our Troop's progress is some we tried)

Module II is Moving Out and Sharing This part of the program gives girls the opportunity to look beyond their own school or city, and to join forces with another troop from elsewhere in their council.

Our Troops Progress (Module I)

Segment 1:Family Heritage

Week 1 of Segment 1: The girls made either a family tree of a family album.

Week 2 of Segment 1: Some girls shared something unique about their families heritage and others drew themselves.  Those who drew themselves labeled the pictures with with things they enjoyed and disliked doing etc.

Segment 2:In-Troop Similarities

Week 1 of Segment 2: The troop drew or made a collage of things each girl NEEDS in order to live.  The different things were surprising however, food, shelter, water, love, etc were common in most.

Week 2 of Segment 2: The troop divided up into groups and made a list of 5 likes and dislikes that were common among everyone in the group.  As our groups combined to become bigger the list became much more difficult.

Segment 3: Community Patch Work

Week 1 of Segment 3: The girls found pictures of community helpers and people who were important to our community.

Week 2 of Segment 3: Some girls found out the meaning behind names in their community, others learned about foods from different ethnic groups, and other learned about different religions in our community.

Segment 4: Sensitivity Awareness

Week 1 of Segment 4: We worked on skits about feelings from different situations.

Week 2 of Segment 4: We learned what it would be like to live without sight.

Segment 5: International Friendship Through Girl Scouting

Week 1 of Segment 5: We planned and carried out a program for Thinking Day.  We performed a Flame Ceremony and everyone received their World Association Pins.  We also played games from different countries.

Week 2 of Segment 5: We learned about the Juliette Low Fund.  We also completed several activities on another country.

Segment 6: Stages Of Life

Week 1 of Segment 6: Using photos we made charts showing the stages of life from babyhood thru old age.

Week 2 of Segment 6: We invited a toddler with his mother into one of our meetings.  We learned all kinds of fascinating things about toddlers and played with them.

Our Troops Progress (Module II)

Unfortunately there was no "sister" troop to be found.  This made it very difficult to complete this portion of the program.  So, we adapted it to what we had available and made it work (same end results).  The girls had a great time and learned a lot!!

The girls got acquainted with girls from another troop first.  Next they shared some of their things with the other girls.  And finally the girls helped plan an outing where they met with the other Girl Scouts and participated in camping activities together.
